Day 5 – Ayres Rock/Uluru to Alice Springs

Day 5 we explored Ayres Rock in the morning before making the final leg up to Alice Springs.

Ayres Rock was really interesting with lots of stories about the Aboriginal people, but no description about how the rock actually got there.  One thing to note, it costs $25 per person to enter the National Park! but we are all glad we made the effort when we made it to the rock and got to touch it.

Leaving Uluru we headed back to the main highway, very nearly running out of fuel on the way.  Lucky there are two campers so we couldn’t becomes stranded, but still no fun (or so Dan says).

Lunch was at the roadhouse in Erldunda which was really nice for a Roadhouse lunch and the first time most of us had tried hot chips with vinegar.  It may sound strange but they were no different to salt and vinegar potato chips, except hot.

Also at Erldunda there was information regarding the exact center of Australia and how it cannot actually be locatedr.  Dan’s thoughts are the center would be the point from the furthermost north/south and east/west, which happens to be somewhere close to the main road north of Erldunda , but no one is sure, so no exact center is given.

Late this evening we made it into Alice Springs and with a nice refreshing swim and a cold drink we are ready for dinner.  Tomorrow we intend to explore Alice, and hopefully see some local sites.

Until tomorrow – Happy New Years to everyone!

Chris & Dan
